Making History at SR 836/NW 87th Avenue

The SR 836/NW 87th Avenue Interchange Westbound Flyover project’s Bridge 7, CSI Structural Steel Box Girder installation was completed over the weekend of March 2nd, a significant accomplishment in bringing this project to completion. Moreover, this 271 ft. single-lane bridge is the longest curved simple-span dual steel box girder structure in the State of Florida. A tremendous amount of coordination was required to ensure safe installation. BPA’s Design Team provided roadway, structural and construction support services to Odebrecht (contractor) on this MDX facility.

The original design comprised a 483 ft. long two-span curved continuous plate girder bridge structure; BPA performed a slight realignment of the bridge and modified the structural system using steel box girders.  This saved the project approximately 42%, or 539,000 pounds, of steel.  Once completed, the project will significantly improve congestion and traffic flow at the SR 836/Dolphin Expressway interchange with NW 87th Avenue by providing new direct expressway access. Project completion is expected this Fall.
