Bascule Bridge Rehabilitation
Bascule bridges pose the highest level of difficulty for protective coatings due to their proximity to salt-laden water, multitude of crevices for trapping corrosives, constant movement, countless obstructed surfaces, wide use of lubricants that can cause coatings to delaminate, etc. BPA has developed particular design and inspection strategies that benefit bridges by increasing the overall quality of the protective coating work, reducing maintenance costs and extending the service life of the coating system. BPA assisted Pinellas County with the removal and replacement of the coating system on one of their bascule bridges. The project included many difficulties related to hazardous paint removal and Coast Guard restrictions. The end result was an above average coating project that will provide long-term service.
